DIY Coasters

A few weeks ago I decided I needed some coasters to go with my new coffee table (I've never really needed coasters before). I didn't want just any coasters, though. I came across a couple of good tutorials but I made a few changes. Here's a list of supplies you'll need:

• 4"x4" white tiles (I bought mine from Home Depot for 16¢ a piece)
• square cork coasters (Hobby Lobby - $2.77 for a pack of 6)
• 5"x5" fabric squares (I used leftovers). You can also use paper, cocktail napkins, etc.
• Mod Podge
• Foam brush
• Scissors
• Clear Krylon Acrylic Spray (Walmart near the spray paint)
• Water proof glue (I skipped this...and used Mod Podge)

Start by wiping off your tiles to remove any dirt or dust. Before I did anything else, I laid a tile upside down on one of my squares of fabric then made small snips from the corners of my fabric to the corners of the tile. This helped the fabric lay more smoothly when I folded it over the edges.

Use your foam brush to apply Mod Podge to the top and sides of the tile. Take one of your fabric squares and place it on top of your tile. Smooth out any bumps. Fold the corners down like in the picture. The main point is to have smooth corners.

Once your fabric is secured on the tile the way you want it, go over the top and sides of the tile with Mod Podge. I did this three times, letting it dry between each coat.

When the final coat of Mod Podge has dried you're ready to seal it. I used a cardboard box as a stand for my tiles while I sprayed them with Krylon. Spray your tiles OUTSIDE. It's pretty smelly stuff. I applied two good coats of Krylon, but you can add more if you feel the need.

When your Krylon has dried (read label on can for drying time) you can glue a cork coaster to the bottom of each tile. I actually just used Mod Podge for this so I'm waiting to see how long they stay on. It's recommended to use a water proof glue, though, which I didn't have on hand and was too impatient to buy.

I'm Back!

I know it has been FOREVER since I've posted to this blog. Between moving (twice since my last post), going back to school and lots of changes in my personal life I've been insanely busy. But no more! I have finished another quilt (pics to come) and have started another one.
I like the colors so much that I've used them in decorating my new living room. I will post pics of my before and after projects in that room as well. So much to look forward to!
Now one more thing. I made a card last night and I really like it. Tell me what you think.
